How to sell digital products on Shopify — the 2026 guide

Everything between "I made a thing" and "it delivers itself while I sleep": what actually sells, how delivery works under the hood, an honest comparison of the delivery apps, and the part most guides skip — what happens after the download.

Updated July 27, 2026 · written by the team building AfterKit — we sell delivery software, and we've marked where that colors our advice

1. What sells (and what it needs from delivery)

Digital products cluster into four families, and each makes different demands of your delivery stack:

The common thread: made once, sold forever, delivered instantly. Instant is the bar — a buyer who pays at midnight and waits for a manual email in the morning is a refund waiting to happen.

2. The storefront part is easy

Shopify treats a digital product like any other product with shipping unchecked. Create the product, price it, publish it — checkout, taxes and payments all work normally. Two settings worth knowing:

  1. Untick "This is a physical product" so no shipping is charged or promised.
  2. If everything in the order is digital, consider auto-archiving fulfillment so orders don't pile up as "unfulfilled" — most delivery apps (AfterKit included) handle the delivery signal independently of fulfillment status.

What Shopify does not do natively is deliver the goods. That's the app decision, and it's the only decision that matters much.

3. Choosing a delivery app — the honest comparison

Disclosure: we build AfterKit. The table below sticks to facts from each app's public Shopify App Store listing as of July 2026 — check current details before deciding.

Rules of thumb we'd give a friend:

4. Delivery UX: meet buyers everywhere they look

After paying, buyers look in four places, in this order: the thank-you page, the confirmation email, the order status page, and (sometimes) their customer account. Good delivery puts the access button in all four — instantly, not "within 24 hours". With AfterKit each of those opens a single branded hub page carrying the whole order: downloads, streams, credential cards with copy buttons, and notes.

5. Protecting files, keys and revenue

6. The part most guides skip: after the download

Most digital stores treat delivery as the finish line. It's the starting line — the buyer just proved they pay for your work. In 2026, with ad costs where they are, the cheapest revenue is the customer you already have:

7. Launch checklist

  1. Product created, shipping unchecked, price set.
  2. Delivery app installed; files/keys/logins attached to the product.
  3. Test order placed with a real card, refunded after — delivery arrived in seconds, access revoked on refund.
  4. Delivery email checked on a phone, in a real inbox (and the spam folder, once).
  5. Thank-you page and order status page both show the access button.
  6. Post-purchase set up: member shop on, first community update drafted, update-email toggle where you want it.

Want the whole checklist handled by one app? AfterKit does instant delivery, keys, logins, streaming, updates and community — starting free.

Frequently asked

Can Shopify sell digital products without any app?

It can sell them (checkout works fine); it can't deliver them. Delivery — the file, key or login reaching the buyer — always comes from an app.

What file size limits should I plan for?

They vary by app; AfterKit handles files up to 5 GB each, which comfortably covers video courses and large sample packs.

How do taxes work on digital products?

Shopify's tax settings handle digital VAT/sales-tax rules by region — configure them in Shopify admin; your delivery app isn't involved. When in doubt, ask an accountant, not a landing page.

Should I sell on Shopify or a marketplace like Gumroad or Etsy?

Marketplaces rent you an audience and take a cut forever; your Shopify store owns the customer relationship. Many sellers do both — but the update-and-community flywheel only compounds where you own the buyer list.
