How to sell digital downloads on Shopify — step by step
July 28, 2026 · AfterKit team
Selling digital downloads on Shopify takes about an afternoon to set up properly. Here's the whole path — product, delivery, protection, and the part most guides skip: what happens after the download.
Step 1: Create the product like any other
In Shopify admin, add a product, set the price, and untick "This is a physical product" so no shipping is charged. Checkout, taxes and payments work exactly as they do for physical goods. Shopify handles the selling — what it doesn't handle natively is the delivery.
Step 2: Pick your delivery method
When an order is paid, something has to hand the buyer their files. Your options: Shopify's free Digital Downloads app (files only, generic experience) or a dedicated delivery app. We compared the field honestly in the 2026 guide — the short version is that the right pick depends on whether you sell only files, or also license keys, logins, and video that should stream instead of download.
With AfterKit, you upload files (up to 5 GB each), attach them to the product, and delivery is live. The access button appears on the thank-you page, the order status page, the customer's account and in a branded email — the second payment lands.
Step 3: Protect the files — and the revenue
- Tokenized links. Buyers get signed links tied to their order, never a raw file URL that can be pasted into a forum.
- Download limits, if you want them. Some apps cap re-downloads per order — Shopify's own free app does, switched on per variant. They deter idle link-sharing, but the file is copyable the moment it lands, so treat a limit as a deterrent rather than protection. AfterKit doesn't cap downloads; it leans on expiring links and revocation instead.
- Automatic revocation. Refunds and cancellations should pull access back automatically — full-order or per line item. A refund that leaves the files behind is just a free copy.
Step 4: Make big files pleasant
Video courses and large packs deserve better than a 1.2 GB download on hotel Wi-Fi. In AfterKit's buyer hub, video and audio stream with resume — buyers pick up at minute twelve where they stopped — and PDFs open inline. Everything stays downloadable on every plan.
Step 5: Don't stop at the download
The buyer just proved they'll pay for your work — that's the start, not the end. Two moves compound from here:
- Keep the product alive. When you ship v2 of a pack, every past buyer should get it automatically. AfterKit syncs product changes to all past orders, with an optional "your order was updated" email. (How that works.)
- Give buyers a place, not a receipt. A community tab with your updates and buyer Q&A turns support into marketing — every answered question reassures the next visitor. (Why community changes the math.)
AfterKit does all of this out of the box. Digital downloads, keys, logins and a buyer community — free plan forever, no order limits.
Install AfterKitCommon questions
Do buyers need an account?
No. Good delivery works from the thank-you page and a secure email link; accounts are a bonus, not a requirement.
What file types can I sell?
Anything — ZIPs, video, audio, PDFs, project files. If it's a file, it delivers; video and audio also stream in the hub on paid plans.
What does it cost to start?
AfterKit's Free plan covers 3 linked products, 5 deliverables each and 1 GB of storage with unlimited orders — enough to launch and prove the store before paying anything.
